The International Final Round of the Economics Olympiad Concludes with 130 Students from 28 Countries

The International Final Round (IFR) of the Economics Olympiad has come to a close, and what an incredible event it was! This year, 130 high school students from 28 countries gathered at the historic International Olympic Academy in Olympia, Greece for a celebration of economics, culture, and international friendship.

🌍 Global Champions Crowned

After days of exams, presentations, and teamwork, the top 10 international champions emerged:

  1. Batyrkhan Mukhtarkhan – Kazakhstan

  2. Marufbek Kholmuminov – Uzbekistan

  3. Ishaan Ashwin – Netherlands

  4. Alex Hatzopoulos – Greece

  5. Markiian Mazur – Ukraine

  6. Zizhen (Jerry) Lin – Canada

  7. Nikos Gatsios – Greece

  8. Tsung-Li Lin – Chinese Taipei

  9. Minh Anh Nguyen – Vietnam

  10. Demetre Ardoteli – Georgia

In the delegation awards, Canada won National Delegation of the Year 🏆, followed by Vietnam in 2nd place and Greece in 3rd.

🏅 Celebrating Teachers and Organizers

The Olympiad also honored the people who make this global competition possible:

  • National Organizer of the Year: Nataliya Melnik from Ukraine’s Bendukidze Free Market Center, for nearly doubling school-round participation from 10,000 to 20,000 students.

  • Teacher of the Year: Efraim Sejdija of SHMKM “Nikolla Shtejn,” TetovĂ«, North Macedonia, who engaged 564 students in the Olympiad — more than any other teacher in 2024–2025.

đź’ˇ Learning Beyond the Competition

The IFR was not only about competing — it was about learning and connecting with the world of economics:

  • Prof. Stephanos Leonardos (King’s College London, representing the Ethereum Foundation) delivered a keynote on AI, Blockchain, and Economics.

  • George Karageorgos (Freedom Finance) shared real-world career advice in the Meet a Mentor session.

  • Prof. Tawni Ferrarini and Prof. Joe Calhoun, co-authors of Common Sense Economics, inspired students to see economics as a toolkit for life, empowering them to make better choices in their future careers and communities.

🎭 Culture & Campus Life

The setting made the experience unforgettable. Students:

  • Swam, played sports, and explored the beautiful IOA campus.

  • Visited the ancient site of Olympia, birthplace of international competition.

  • Enjoyed a spectacular Cultural Night, featuring traditional Greek dancing by Lykeion ton Ellinidon, a historic cultural association dedicated to preserving Hellenic traditions.
